The 26 people on our second Section Weekend in the Lake District enjoyed typical Lakes weather, heavy rain and sunshine.
On arrival we enjoyed tea/coffee and cake in the lounge as we chatted and waited for the next people to arrive. A Bucks Fizz reception followed at 7 pm before we had our evening meal.
The drive to Honister Slate Mine on Saturday morning was in torrential rain & low cloud, but fortunately it didn’t make a lot of difference as we were going into a mine. It felt amazing to be standing in a large cavern inside a mountain! When we came out of the mine the clouds had lifted and there was some sunshine to enhance the scenic views from the exit half way up the mountain side. The views were stunning during the drive back to the hotel & all the cars returned safely, albeit one or two had some minor problems which were soon sorted.
On returning to the hotel, we enjoyed afternoon tea, courtesy of Jan & Roger Hall. Thank you to you both, it was just what we needed & everyone appreciated it.
In the evening canapés were served in the bar before our evening meal. The food, as last year, was delicious & the hotel staff could not have been more helpful. After the meal, tea, coffee & home made chocolates were served in the lounge while we chatted away the hours, some of us until the early hours.
On Sunday our private tour of Levens Hall was interesting & we were given the key to open the gates to allow the proper cars to park in front of the Hall. The sun came out & it was warm as we walked around the gardens before lunch. The highlight of the weekend for two of our eccentric gentlemen was to stand on the footplate of a traction engine called Bertha & watch eccentric cogs go round!
We ate lunch in the café, followed by the presentation of awards to the quiz winners. There was a tie between Grahame McDonald, Gordon & Margaret Blacklock and Jackie & Martin Vinson, though Sue missed one of Jackie & Martin’s correct answers so, on the day, the tie breaker was between Gordon & Grahame. Grahame won. Well done! Sue apologises to Jackie & Martin. Fond farewells were made to those who were leaving to go home while 10 of us returned to the hotel for a third night of excellent food & chat.
It was nice to see Florence & Pat again as well as meeting Janet & Jane for the first time- they were doing a Thelma & Louise in a very nice Mark V Bentley.
Thank you to everyone who came, especially to those of you who have not been to a Section Weekend before. We hope you enjoyed it & look forward to next year’s weekend.
